Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is today one of the most modern, frenetic and exciting cities in Asia. From the late sixteenth century, Jakarta's history was dictated by the Dutch East India Company, who forcibly took possession of the town, renaming it Batavia in 1619 and continued to rule over it for about 300 years. It wasn't until 1945 that Indonesia achieved independence and Jakarta became the nation's capital. The changing face of Indonesia is traced in many of Jakarta's museums and the recent restoration of Old Batavia has preserved the fine examples of seventeenth and eighteenth-century colonial architecture.
