“The world in one island” is a phrase often used to refer to the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, and this couldn’t be more appropriate; the island has an incredibly diverse range of ecosystems, from coastal land to deserts and even dense pine forest. This is largely due to the islands climate and geography, which allows microclimates to exist in which these largely self-contained ecosystems can exist.
In less than an hour drive from the beach and you might find yourself in an arid mountain region, or perhaps a sprawling forest. This is one of the reasons why Gran Canaria is such a popular holiday destination. The other, also climate related, is due to is extremely mild weather, making it the perfect place to escape for those unable to bear the harsh winters of the northern hemispheres.
