Surrounded by the Avila Mountains, Caracas, Venezuela's capital and largest city, is extremely cosmopolitan and a major industrial centre. Birthplace of the liberator Simón Bolívar, the city still retains an old colonial district, Petares, with many examples of colonial architecture in and around Plaza Bolívar, including the 17th-century cathedral and City Hall. The upmarket commercial areas bustle with shops, boutiques, art galleries, fine restaurants and cafes while the cultural complex, comprising the Teresa Carreño Theatre, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Children's Museum and the National Art Gallery, is in the Parque Central area.
