A former Jute Baron's Mansion converted to a tasteful town house hotel, retaining some of the original features. Close to city centre, university, Ninewells Hospital and main shopping area.
When Dennis Smith acquired The Shaftesbury, he ensured that, although all necessary upgrading was carried out, it was done sympathetically. Many of the original features were retained, in order that the property could keep its essential character. A huge white marble fireplace dominates what was the Drawing Room and is now part of the restaurant. The other black, marble fireplace - also Victorian - can be found in Room 1. The rooms are all exceptionally spacious, each is different, and each is furnished differently. Room 12, our Honeymoon Suite, is our largest. This delightful room was the Billiard Room, and has the most wonderful Gothic window. It gives the occupant views over Dundee and the River Tay. The Tay has always played an important role in Dundee life, and it can be seen from several rooms. Our bar is large enough to accommodate a 'guid crowd,' yet remains intimate. Friendly bar staff will serve you from a wide range of drinks and refreshments. The period pieces tucked away in the building include the original ceramic fuseboxes and the system for communication with the domestic staff. Proprietor Dennis Smith acquired the premises in 1990, converting the town house into a comfortable retreat for all manner of guests. Being close to Dundee's two universities, The Shaftesbury attracts many visiting academics. Business visitors find the hotel is very convenient for the commercial sector of town too. Internationally renowned Ninewells Hospital and the Technology Park are also close by, and The Shaftesbury is within five minutes of arterial roads north and south. A wide selection of malt whiskies can be sampled in the Garden Bar. Our licence is restricted to residents and restaurant guests only, so you can be sure of a quiet, relaxing evening. The Garden Bar can be hired for meetings during daytime hours. Visitors to The Shaftesbury will be delighted with the fare they find in the hotel's Rachel's Restaurant and the Garden Bar. In fact, the standard of food is so high, many guests say that they make their return visit just to eat at Chef Morrison's table! The Shaftesbury has established a reputation for the quality and variety of its food, cooked by chef Bill Morrison, who has worked with Dennis Smith for over 20 years. If you would like a dish that isn't on the menu when you visit, chef will be happy to cook just for you! He especially loves cooking Scottish Game dishes.
