- The Wingate Inn Dulles Airport invites you to visit our newest neighbor, located just 2 miles from the hotel. The Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum has built a new museum for the display and preservation of it's own collection of historic aviation and space artifacts. In honor of it's major donor, it has been named the "Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center". Located at Washington Dulles International Airport, the Udvar-Hazy Center provides much needed space for the objects that tell the history of aviation and space flight.
- The Udvar-Hazy Center is south of the main terminal at Dulles Airport in northern Virginia, near the intersection of Routes 28 and 50. The 70,611 square-meter (760,057 square-foot) building is situated on 176.5 acres. The facility has a large aviation exhibit hangar and a separate space exhibit hangar, an observation tower from which visitors can watch air traffic at Dulles Airport, classrooms, a large format theater, food service and more. Shortly after opening day, a a larger variety food court and museum store will open. A shuttle bus service runs between the downtown Museum and the new Center for a fee. - The Museum currently has over 80 aircraft and dozens of space artifacts on display including the Space Shuttle "Enterprise", an SR-71, Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, the Dash prototype of the Boeing 707; the B-29 Super fortress "Enola Gay' and the de Havilland Chipmunk aerobatic plane, to name a few. The Space Shuttle will soon undergo restoration inside the Space Hangar where it now resides.
- Visitors can walk among artifacts on the floor and view hanging aircraft from elevated walkways (skyways). Many engines, rockets, satellites, helicopters, airliners, ultra-lights, and experimental flying machines are all on display for the first time in a museum setting.
- Another special feature of the Center is the Wall of Honor, a permanent memorial along the entry to the Museum with the names of tens of thousands of people who have contributed to our aviation and space exploration heritage - one name could be yours!
