Cairns enjoys a tropical climate and often boasts excellent outdoor weather conditions with clear blue skies and pleasant breezy nights.

As Australia is geographically situated in the southern hemisphere, its seasons are opposite to countries such as America and Europe. Therefore instead of conventional four season climatic conditions, Cairns has only two seasons - wet (Summer) and dry (Winter).

Summer, also known as the wet season, occurs between the months of November to April. These monsoonal patterns generally see healthy rainfalls of approximately 169 mm (7 inches) per month; however some periods even record an average rainfall of 400 mm (16 inches). Swimming is not permitted during this time except near the Great Barrier Reef as the shallow waters attract Box Jellyfish.

Winter, also known as the dry season, lasts between May and October and offers deal weather conditions with low humidity levels fanned by cool sea breezes.

At times, Cairns is prone to cyclonic weather conditions. Whilst they can be quite destructive, cities like Cairns are built to withstand the strong winds.
