Agra Travel Tips
There’s nothing like insider knowledge to a successful and enjoyable tourist experience. Agra, with its legendary heritage, is a place where all tourists to India should visit. Be it for business or pleasure, here are some tips to make your visit to Agra a pleasant one. The best time to visit Agra is between October and March, when the sunshine is mild and the breeze is soothing.
Arts and Events
Agra is best described as the legacy of the Mughal Empire. The home of the Taj Mahal, Agra is a treasure-trove of architectural masterpieces. The beautiful Mehtab Bagh Garden, the majestic Fort of Agra and the many tombs of great kings are some of the many must-see attractions that dot the Agra map. In addition, the variety of religious festivals, mostly parades of worship to the Hindu deities, is a great cultural attraction in Agra.
Greeting Someone in Agra
The Indian-Hindu greeting is to bring ones palms together with the fingers pointing up, tilt the head slightly forward and saying ‘Namaste’. Shaking of hands is also acceptable - but as most Indian women do not prefer to shake hands, it is always safest to greet them in the traditional manner or else wait until they offer their hand first.
Agra Tipping Advice
A 10% tip is normal in high-end restaurants that do not add a service charge to the bill. Small change in modest restaurants is acceptable. Round off taxi fares; add a bit more for exceptionally good service.
Visitor Essentials
Women Travellers
Women travellers are expected to be modestly dressed - short dresses or skirts, and tight fitting or revealing clothes are best avoided - especially when travelling alone.
Footwear
Visitors to places of worship must remove their footwear, as a sign of respect, before stepping inside. A majority of Indians also remove their footwear when entering their own homes - therefore it is polite to do the same when visiting someone’s home.
Health Risks
Gastroenteritis, typhoid, cholera or jaundice may be acquired from unhygienic water or contaminated food, therefore avoid consumption of tap water, as it is unsafe; it is always best to drink bottled water purchased from a reputable store.
