Mumbai Attractions
Mumbai is the city that never sleeps - in effect it is the Las Vegas of India – with a night life that is only limited by the imagination of the visitor: night clubs, discotheques, world-class restaurants, cinemas and pubs leave no doubt in the minds of visitors that this is very much a city riding high on the cosmopolitan wave.
Mumbai is also a city that is blessed with historic highlights befitting of a city whose origins stretch back to ancient times. Here visitors will find ancient places of worship and British colonial architecture combining effortlessly to create an ambience that is as unique as it is charming. The major attractions include Gateway of India – a 262 ft high gateway of overlooking the sea, Rajabai Clock Tower, Hanging Gardens, the Aquarium and Marine Drive.
Chowpatty Beach
Chowpatty beach is in the heart of the city and, has over the years become more than a centre of leisure for residents.
Gateway of India
The Gateway of India is one of the most iconic structures in India. This 26 metre high structure, which recalls the 16th Century Gujarati architecture, was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India in 1911. Since then, its stature both as a historical and cultural attraction has only grown amongst visitors and residents alike.
High Court
This English Gothic style building, the Mumbai High Court, was built in 1878 and stands today reflecting the might of British colonial justice. The structure rises 54.2 metres in height, with the watchful eyes of Justice on the Western front of the building.
Hutatma Chowk
Also known as the Flora Fountain, the Hutatma Chowk, named after the Roman God of abundance. It was erected in 1869 in honour of Sir Bartle, Governor of Bombay.
Jain Temple
This white marbled temple was built as a dedication to Adinath, the first Tirthankara or apostle of Jains.
Mani Bhawan (Gandhi Memorial)
Ghandi’s Mumbai residence between 1917 and 1934 is now a dedicated memorial and museum. Here visitors will find a variety of artefacts, pictures and books related to the life and times of Ghandi.
Marine Drive
Also called the ‘Netaji Subhas Chandra Marg’, this promenade along the waterfront runs from Nariman point to Chowpatty beach and ends at the Malabar hills. In the evenings, it is an ideal spot to watch the sunset.
Hanging Gardens
The Hanging Gardens history dates back to 1981, when it was laid on top of a reservoir on Malabar Hills. It is very popular with courting couples, affording a spectacular view of the Marine Drive and Chowpatty Beach.
Prince of Wales Museum
This was an additional structure built to commemorate the visit of King George V. The building is in the midst of a fantastic landscaped garden. The Museum was opened in 1923 and includes an art and archaeological collection
Taraporewala Aquarium
This aquarium was opened in 1951 and is home to a huge variety of marine and fresh water specimens.
Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus
This imposing building has a long history - it was from the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus that the first train rolled out towards Thane - and with its celebrated Gothic architecture, it manages to transport visitors to a bygone era.
National Gallery of Modern Art
The National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai is the home for countless artworks of Indian origin.
Haji Ali Mosque
The white mosque is the tomb of Saint Haji Ali, a wealthy Muslim who renounced the world and proceeded to Mecca. Legend has it that after he died, his casket drifted away and came to the spot where the mosque is built today.
Kalbadevi
This is a bazaar that continues to be a popular with tourists. Here, visitors will also find the Jama Masjid and the Mumbadevi temple dedicated to the patron God of Mumbai's original inhabitants.
Nehru Planetarium
Located eight kilometres from the city centre, the Mumbai Planetarium provides a glimpse into the mysteries of the cosmos. Of particular interest to children and space enthusiasts are the regular screenings of film shows.
