Indonesian breakfast is a 'fatty affair', with battered, deep-fried banana fritters a favourite. Sweetcorn fritters are also popular. This is most often washed down with homemade iced tea, made using lots of sugar.
You'll soon notice two staples on any menu in Denpasar, Bali - nasi goreng and mei goreng. Goreng means fried (usually with an egg) while nasi means rice and mie means noodles. A third word added at the end denote whether the meal comes with fish, poultry, meat etc.
Denpasar, the capital of Bali and a popular stop-off for tourist on their way to the beach resorts down south, is a great place to find almost any type of food, from excellent traditional Balinese cooking through to Western treats such as pizza and hamburgers.
If you are short on time, a great way to combine shopping and a culinary exploration is to visit one of the night markets, such as Pasar Senggol Kreneng, which often have a plethora of food stands. Although the food on offer may not be very healthy, you’ll be able to sample a range of Balinese, Western and other Asian delicacies for almost next to nothing.
Bali Bakery, a local franchise, offers fresh coffee and baked croissants, doughnuts and other pastries from Seminyak Square. It also has a branch in Kuta.
There are many local cafes and roadside food stalls around town, any of which are an excellent place to try authentic Balinese cuisine, as the locals eat it. Babi Guling Chandra is an excellent place for those wanting to sample local food, but in a slightly more tourist-friendly setting.
