Kota Kinabalu - Getting There

Getting to Kota Kinabalu by Air

Flights from major capitals around Asia and many towns in Malaysia operate in and out of Kota Kinabalu Internation Airport, situated 8km outside of the city. Low cost airlines such as AirAsia also operate from this airport, making travel to other destinations in Malaysia very easy.

The quickest way to reach to airport from the city is to take a taxi at about RM30 for a one-way journey.

For more information about Kota Kinabalu Internation Airport see our Kota Kinabalu Airport Guide.

Getting to Kota Kinabalu by Train

There is only one train line in the Sabah province of Malaysia, which operates between Tanjung Aru, in the south of Kota Kinabalu, and Tenom, stopping at Papar, Beaufort and Saliwangan, as well as several other towns, along the way.

A full journey, from one end to the other, costs RM7.50 Economy fare and RM22.80 First Class fare.

Getting to Kota Kinabalu by Road

There are many bus and taxo servoces which operate between Kota Kinabalu and other towns within the Sabah region, or even further afield. The best way to buy a ticket is to head directly to the bus terminal in the city centre and purchase one from one of the operator counters.

Getting to Kota Kinabalu by Ferry

As Koat Kinabalu is located on the coast, it is also possible to reach the city by ferry service from Brunei via Labuan Island. The journey takes about a full day and can be booked as a single package. Leisure ferries also operate from Kota Kinabalu’s Jesselton Point Waterfront’s ferry terminal to the various Marine Parks located close to the city.

The fee for a single adult journey to either Labuan or Tunku Abdul Rahman Park is RM7.20.
