Colombo Travel Tips
Colombo Dining
Sri Lanka is well-known for its wonderful variety of delectable dishes - and Colombo, the financial capital of the country, is no exception. A wide selection of restaurants, cafés and bars serving everything from local to international cuisine are situated throughout Colombo. Sri Lankan delicacies are spicy and none is more popular than rice and curry - but for the more adventurous among you hoppers with seeni sambol, usually fiery hot, is a recommended choice.
Colombo Tipping Advice
Most of the middle- or upper-range eateries in Colombo charge a 10% service charge on the bill - this makes tipping unnecessary. But if there isn't a service charge; use your discretion. Something in between 5% and 10% of the bill is fine if the service is good. Porters expect around SLR 10.00 per heavy bag. It is not necessary to tip taxis and three wheelers - although this depends entirely on the quality of service and personal choice.
Visitor Essentials
Women Travellers
As in most developing countries around the world, women travellers in Sri Lanka, especially ones travelling alone, should be very careful. Dress modestly and avoid lonely and deserted areas - even in Colombo. Always keep your belongings close to you and when indoors keep your doors and windows locked.
Thievery
Like most major cities, Colombo too has its share of thieves and pickpockets. It is always advisable not to flaunt your wealth and keep an eye on your belongings - for unattended items disappear quite quickly. Even though Colombo is very safe it is always better to lock your doors and windows when inside.
Medical Facilities
Colombo is by far the best equipped city in Sri Lanka as far as medical facilities are concerned. The Colombo National Hospital as well as a number of private hospitals are situated in Colombo. For medical emergencies contact:
