Cambridge - Getting There

Arriving in Cambridge by Air

Although there is a local airport within Cambridgeshire, it is largely used by private flights. The closest comercial airport to Cambridge is London Stanstead Airport, which is 30 miles to the south of Cambridge. Airlines such as Ryan Air and EasyJet connect this airport with many cities in Europe.

The quickest way to reach Cambridge from Stanstead airport is by train, with the journey taking only 35 minutes. The train leaves directly from the airport. Taxis are also available and whilst are often more convenient for travellers with lots of luggage, then can often cost at least three times the train fare. The National Express bus service operates a route from the airport to Cambridge every two hours, with the journey lasting just under an hour and costing from £14 return.

Another way to reach Cambridge from Europe is to take the Eurostar from Paris, Brussels or Lille and then a local UK train from London to Cambridge.

Arriving in Cambridge by Rail

If you are already in the United Kingdom, the easiest way to reach Cambridge is by train. Trains from London depart from King’s Cross and Liverpool Street stations. The journey takes about an hour and tickets cost from £19 for a single journey.

Arriving in Cambridge by Road

Bus and Coach Services
There are many coach services which connect Cambridge with London as well as other major towns such as Birmingham, Oxford and Bristol. Companies include National Express, MegaBus and Stagecoach. Tickets can cost from as little as £1 if booked severl weeksin advance.

Driving to Cambridge
The M1 motorway connects Cambridge with London and the south of England. The A14, which you would use to reach Cambridge, joins with the A1 and M1 for routes to the north of England.

While driving to Cambridge is quite easy, driving around within the city and parking can be a problem. To combat this the city has installed several 'Parl & Ride' lots outside the city. Here you will be able to park your car with ease and catch a regular shuttle bus into the city. There are many signs as you approach the city which explain where to find the nearest Park & Ride lot with space available.
