Although a service charge is incorporated in hotel bills it is customary to tip chambermaids per night and porters by the bag. A service charge is included on restaurant bills, but it is usual to tip according to the level of service given.
Strasbourg Dining
The French have long been renowned for their love of the very best food, and the good citizens of Alsace are no exception. Eating out is essential for a complete Strasbourgian experience. From the most expensive, formal restaurants to the smaller, less formal cafes and bars, the menus are creative, inspired and elegantly presented. Diners are encouraged to be adventurous and try something new. Traditional foods of Alsace include Pate de Fois Gras (goose liver pate), choucroute (cabbage cooked with goose fat, onions and juniper berries), and kougelhopf (sweet pastries made with eggs, raisins and almonds). The dry white wines of Alsace, often made with the Riesling grape, are much acclaimed.
When to Visit - Arts and Events
December finds Strasbourg playing host to its biggest annual event, the Marche de Noel, or Christmas market. July and August are enlivened by Les Nuits de Strasbourg. The city has a parliament, a court and major convention center so many visitors will find themselves here for a political or judicial event, or for a trade fair.
