Montréal is classified as humid continental or hemiboreal by the Köppen climate classification system. The city sees quite a bit of rainfall throughout the year, receiving an average of 900mm (35.3 inches). The summer months get the most rain, and ironically, the most sun. July is Montréal’s warmest month, with average high temperatures of 26.3 degrees C (79.3 degrees F) during the day and lows of 20.9 degrees C (69.6 degrees F). Summer days and nights often feel hotter because of the relatively high humidity.

You won’t have to worry about being too hot in the winter months, though. The coldest month is January. Average lows reach -14.9 degrees C (5.2 degrees F). Montréal has the dubious distinction of being colder than both Moscow and Saint Petersburg. As the humidity makes summer days feel hotter, the wind chill makes winter days seem much colder. On these days, bundle up and keep exposed skin to an absolute minimum. Or better yet, find a good café and enjoy a long cup of coffee. The city gets about 2.25 meters (84 inches) of snow each year.

Spring and fall are beautiful and more temperate months. Each averages rainfall of between 55 and 94 mm (2.2 and 3.7 inches) per month. These are also the shortest seasons, and it is not unusual to see snow well into spring or late in autumn. But sometimes, the city will be treated to a gorgeous Indian Summer.
