Washington - Notes and Coins
Currency Exchange
Airports have exchange bureaus, but you can find much better rates in many of the banks throughout the city.
The majority of businesses accept nearly every form of payment: cash, credit/debit cards, and traveler’s checks. Because Washington is an important location for many different countries, if you carry all three payments methods with you, there is a very low chance of being turned down.
Traveler’s checks provide a good measure of safety and act similarly to cash in the United States. If they are stolen, they are easily replaced. Make sure to keep a record of the check numbers, as it will be necessary should the checks get stolen or misplaced. Keep this record away from the actual checks to keep them safe. It is also a good idea to obtain the checks in US dollars (US$), as well as getting them in large enough denominations in order to avoid service fees.
Banks
Bank operating hours can vary from bank to bank, but on average they are open Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. On Saturday they typically open at 9:00am and close at 12:00pm and are closed on Sundays.
However, many banks offer 24-hour ATM service that are affiliated with numerous networks. You may be charged a small fee by using these ATMs (often $2).
