Shimla Attractions
The picturesque hill resort of Shimla was initially established by the British as a hill station, and was renowned as the charming summer capital of the British in India. Located on a 12 kilometre long semi-circular ridge in the mid-western Himalayan ranges, Shimla was originally occupied by British troops in the early 19th century. The unforgettable train journey with splendid views through breathtaking landscapes, over high-arched bridges and snow-capped mountains to Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh is an experience not to be missed.
One of the most famous hill stations in northern India, travellers will enjoy the moderate climate, easy accessibility, and many attractions that Shimla has to offer. Surrounded by evergreen pine forests and apple orchards, the district of Shimla has a multicultural and multi-religious population. Tourists frequent the area during the summer months to explore and experience the many attractions.

Shimla State Museum (Scandal Point)
Opened in 1974, the museum exhibits sculptures, costumes, coins, photos, miniature Pahari paintings, textiles, wood-carvings and jewellery of the area.

Indian Institute of Advanced Study (Rashtrapati Niwas)
The former home of Lord Dufferin, the British Viceroy, now houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (formerly Viceregal Lodge). The tranquil ambience, English Renaissance décor and landscaped lawns make this the perfect setting for students of politics or literature.

Jakhu Hill
The highest peak in the area, located two kilometres from Shimla, offers a breathtaking view of the snow-capped mountains and the town. An old temple of Hanuman is at the peak.

Summer Hill
Positioned on the Shimla-Kalka railway, the picturesque town of Summer Hill is the location of the Pradesh University. When visiting Shimla, Mahatma Gandhi lived in these tranquil surroundings.

Annandale
A popular location for polo, cricket and picnics, Annandale is renowned as the playground of Shimla. It’s located two to four kilometres from the ridge.

Tara Devi
The perfect location for rest and tranquillity, Tara Devi has a hilltop shrine dedicated to the goddess of the stars. The headquarters of the Bharat Scouts and Guides are also located here.

Naldehra
Renowned for having one of the highest and oldest golf courses in India, Naldehra is a tranquil village located 15 kilometres north of Shimla. Mahunag Mandir, a temple, is located in the midst of the golf course.

Chail
Built on three hills, Chail was created as the summer capital by the Maharaja of Patiala. The village is just three kilometres from the world’s highest cricket ground and a nature reserve.

Sankat Mochan
The renowned Hanuman temple can be reached by car or foot. Breathtaking views of Shimla can be seen from the temple.

Mashobra
The site of the annual Sipi fair in June, it’s located 13 kilometres from Shimla and offers ideal picnic spots. The closest guest house is located three kilometres away in Craignano.

Kufri
The winter sports capital 16 kilometres from Shimla, guests have ski facilities, including equipment for rental at the HPTDC winter sports club. Offering picturesque views of the surrounding mountains, Kufri is a perfect location for picnics, and also has a zoo.

Kasauli
With many wonderful walks, Kasauli is a pleasant location and an alternative to staying in Shimla. Sanawar, a short walk from Kasauli, has a renowned colonial college and is a delightful hill town.
