All nationalities except Nepal and Bhutan require a visa in order to visit India for any purpose (tourism or business). This can be applied for via your country's Indian Embassy. Tourism visas are valid from six months to one year, with single or multiple entries. The maximum length of stay allowed is six months, regardless of your visa length. The visa start date will be the date of issue.
India recently introduced Tourism Visa-on-Arrival service for a select number of countries. Nationals from these countries are permitted to apply for their visa upon entry to India, provided they are visiting for tourism only and have proof of return travel and travel funds. The visa is valid for thirty days.
Currently the countries included are Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore only. This visa scheme is reportadly being run for a period of one year, so ensure you check with your Indian Embassy before travelling if it is still valid.
The Indian High Commission in the UK states that there should be a gap of at least two months between each trip to India. This requirement is only imposed on those travelling for tourism.
