Tokyo - Notes and Coins
Currency Exchange
Major credit cards are accepted in the larger hotels and stores, but most Japanese operate with cash. Cash and travellers cheques can be exchanged in banks, post offices and currency exchange bureaux. Banks are usually open Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm. Travellers cheques offer the best exchange rate and are best taken in US dollars. ATMs do not accept all credit and debit cards; only the international ATMs in post offices, airports and some major stores.
Banks
Banks in Japan are open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Long lines are common especially around lunchtime. Take a number from the machine, but also check with an attendant if your are in the right place if the bank is busy. Many banks are spread over several floors, so you want to at least get in the right area before you start to line up.
ATMS and withdrawing cash
One of the biggest complaints visitors have when visiting Tokyo is the lack of ATMs which accept foreign cards. Technology is very advanced in Japan and Tokyo, but somehow the banking industry seems to have been left behind. The situation has improved slightly, but it is still not easy finding an ATM that accepts foreign cards, and many ATMs actually close in the early evening, or are closed on holidays. Many smaller restaurants, hotels and bars don't accept credit cards, so be sure to have plenty of cash in your pocket.
Shinsei Bank's ATMs in Tokyo accept most major cards and are open 24 hours/365 days a year. Some of their branches are open until 7pm. Citibank ATMs in Tokyo also provide a good service for foreigners, as do the Post Office Yucho ATMs located at most 7-Eleven convenience stores.
