Christchurch Travel Tips

Dining

The Christchurch and Canterbury region is one of New Zealand’s best options for food lovers, as plenty of eateries offering everything from delicious lamb and Crayfish (lobster) to fresh vegetables and excellent wines are located throughout the region. When dining, it is often better to use cutlery rather than using one’s fingers, although certain dishes are better enjoyed when eaten in the latter manner.

Tipping Advice

In Christchurch, tipping for service isn’t expected - although if one feels the service is excellent, offering a small sum as gratuity is considered to be polite.

Visitor Essentials

Visas

Christchurch requires a valid passport from all visitors. A number of countries have reciprocal arrangements whereby a visa is not required for visits shorter than three months. Before visiting, please check if your country is among them. Others are adviced to apply for visas at least three months prior to their visits.

Credit Cards

Most hotels, restaurants, shops, and car rentals in Christchurch accept all major credit cards. International credit cards may be used to withdraw cash from automated teller machines, providing the card is encoded with a Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Health Risks

Although there are no snakes or dangerous animals in New Zealand, visitors should be aware of the following health risks:

Sandflies - in wet areas, particularly in Fiordland, sandflies can be pests, but are effectively controlled by use of an insect repellent.

Sunburn - New Zealand’s clear, unpolluted atmosphere and relatively low latitudes produce sunlight stronger than much of Europe and North America, so be prepared to wear hats and sun block if you plan to be out in the sun for more than 15 to 20 minutes.

Giardia - Giardia is a water-borne parasite causing diarrhoea. To avoid contracting it, water from lakes, ponds or rivers must be boiled before drinking.
