Christchurch - Transportation

Christchurch Transpotation

Arriving by Air

The Christchurch International Airport (CHC) is South Island , New Zealand 's main airport - connecting with most major international and domestic destinations.

The airport is conveniently located just 12 kilometres away from the city centre - taxis, shuttle buses and public bus services provide easy access to most parts of the city and many places nearby. In addition to this, rental car options are also available at the Christchurch Airport (CHC).

By Train

Located on Clarence Street in Addington, on the south-western side of Christchurch , the city's train station is just two kilometres from Christchurch city centre. From the airport, visitors can take the free bus service to the station and then travel to most other parts of Christchurch, as trains are available to a number of locations including Kaikoura, Picton and Blenheim, with regular connections to Wellington, Greymouth and Arthur's Pass.

By Buses or Coaches

Buses in Christchurch are efficient and inexpensive, operated by the 'Metro' from Monday to Saturday between 6:30 am and 10:30 pm and on Sunday between 9:00 am and 9:00 pm. Departing from the City Bus Exchange, located on Central Colombo Street, Christchurch bus schedules can be obtained from the Exchange and at the main Christchurch and Canterbury Visitors' Centre on Cathedral Square.

Free yellow shuttle buses operating within the city centre, the ‘After Midnight Express Service' running every hour from midnight to 4:00 am, and the guided tour ‘Best Attractions Direct' double-decker buses are also popular transportation options among visitors to Christchurch.

Getting Around Christchurch

Taxis

One of the most convenient ways of getting around Christchurch is by taxi. Taxis are aplenty and operate to most parts of the city and nearby. Several taxi ranks are located around the city with the main rank being situated in north-western side of Cathedral Square.

Bicycles

Cycling in Christchurch is a common way to travel, as much of central Christchurch is suitable for cycling - with relatively quiet roads and a flat terrain. A number of cycle-hire shops are situated off Cathedral Square .

Foot

Christchurch is well suited for pedestrians and has a fairly compact city centre. Travelling around Christchurch city centre by foot is the perfect way to sightsee, with many of Christchurch 's best tourist attractions and museums located near to each other.
