Social Conventions

Most of the attractions in Naples are churches and because these places are worship grounds, visitors must take special care to dress accordingly. Revealing clothes are not accepted inside churches and if you are travelling in the summer when covered clothing is not practical, carry an article of clothing which you can tie around yourself when entering a place of religious significance. Switch off mobile phones when entering a church and do not eat or drink within the premises.

A kiss is the informal and friendly Italian greeting; first on the right cheek, and then on the left.

Business Etiquette

Formal business suits are the accepted dress for both men and women when attending business meetings. Punctuality is greatly appreciated. Business lunches are preferred over business dinners and as Italians feel mealtimes are for enjoyment, formality at a business lunch is uncommon.

Business Hours

Banks are open on weekdays from 8:30 am to 1:15 pm and 2:45 pm to 3:45 pm.
Post offices are open from Monday to Saturday 9:00 am to 1:00 pm; central and main district post offices are open until 6:00 pm on weekdays and 9:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday.

Tipping

In Naples tipping is appreciated and could ensure good service on return visits. It is standard to tip the waiters at restaurants 5% - 10%, depending on the service. Tip the rest room attendants 10 - 25 cents, taxi drivers 5% - 10% of the fare according to the metre and tour guides about EUR 1.50 per person for a half-day group tour.

Health Risks

Visitors to Naples run the risk of contracting traveller's diarrhoea, partly because of the excessive intake of olive oil and wine. Contaminated seafood is a serious health hazard; travellers are advised to dine only at well-established restaurants.

The current is 220 volts, 50 Hz alternating current (AC)
Wall outlets take Continental-type plugs, with two or three round pins.

General Safety

The main safety issues in Naples are car thieves, pick pockets and frauds. Only keep small change in your purse and distribute the rest of the money in hidden pockets. Be aware of pick pockets when travelling in crowded areas. Always make sure bags and cameras have straps and hang it at hip level or higher. Never make expensive purchases from unlicensed dealers.
