Naples Transportation

Naples is one of the oldest and largest cities in Italy, visited by a large number of tourists each year. The historically important sites and panoramic views bring in crowds in large numbers to Naples. The city is well-connected to other major cities in Italy by air and the sophisticated rail and road network provides easy access to all Naples attractions.

By Air

The Naples International Airport is located about eight kilometres (five miles) north of Naples city centre. Daily flights from Rome and other cities in Italy are available from Alitalia, AirOne, and Meridiana airlines. Several international airlines also fly from the Naples International Airport. The Alibus bus service, ANM bus and taxis provide transport to and from Naples to the airport.

By Train

Naples has two main railway terminals: Stazione Centrale at Piazza Garibaldi and Stazione Mergellina at Piazza Piedigrotta. A railway network connects Naples with other cities in Italy. Circumvesuviana is the most frequently used line by visitors and it provides transport from Stazione Centrale to Herculaneum, Pompeii, and Sorrento. The other line, Circumflegrea, travels to the archaeological zone of Cumae.

By Bus

A bus network operates in Campania and in some instances a bus ride can be faster than a train ride. Therefore it is important for visitors to check the train and bus schedules before deciding the mode of transportation they’ll use. There are three major bus companies. ANM handles the bus service within Naples and the main bus stop is at Piazza Garibaldi. CTP and SITA handle long distance routes out of Naples city. Tickets must be purchased prior to boarding the bus and always remember to get the ticket time stamped.

By Car

Car rental companies such as Avis, Hertz, Alamo, Budget and Dollar provide rental cars in Naples. Travellers should remember the Italians drive rather fast and at peak times, finding a parking space in the city can also be troublesome. However, if you want to travel outside the congested city centre, hiring a car is one of the best Naples transportation options.

By Subway

Naples features two subway systems, Metropolitana and Metropolitana Collinare, and they are the quickest to travel when traffic is heavy.

By Taxi

Taxis are probably the most popular Naples transportation option, especially for business purposes; although taxi rides prove to be expensive. Taxis can be found at the taxi stands and at all the major squares of the city or they can be contacted by phone. Make sure you always get in to an officially licensed taxi and agree on the fare before starting on the journey.
