A shining new star in the heart of Bilbao has made all the difference to this lovely Spanish city with its historical Old Town. Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum transformed Bilbao from a small-scale industrial port city to a fantastic retreat in-line with the most visited European destination cities.
The sixth-largest city and home to one of Spain’s biggest ports, Bilbao is the political capital of the Basques and is renowned for its shipbuilding history. In the past, Bilbao was not known as a popular tourist destination and, owing to its grime covered buildings, has even been described as a grey, decaying smokestack city. Today, however, this coastal city has undergone an urban renewal - a positive step towards improving Bilbao’s tourist industry.
In the centre of the city’s convergence towards this more inviting environment is the Guggenheim Museum, the city’s miracle worker. Along with its construction, Bilbao saw an astonishing demand for its fabulous food, art and nightlife. Continuing to entice the traveller from all wakes of life, Bilbao is a hotspot for the nature and history lover.
Bilbao’s Old Town area is famous for its monuments as well as the excellent choice of dining options and fashionable boutiques it offers. Nightlife is also in no short supply - the Old Town features many nightspots and pubs for dining, dancing and even partying throughout the night.
From a small village on the Nervion River to a major industrial seaport to a refreshing tourist destination, Bilbao’s importance has grown with time - and today more than ever, it is attracting thousands of visitors from worldwide destinations.
