How to get to Izmir

Izmir is easiest to reach by plane if you are travelling from outside of Turkey. Most flights arrive and depart via Adnan Menderes Airport. If you are trying to get to Izmir from inside Turkey, it may be easier to use bus, train or ferry travel.

Arriving in Izmir by Plane: Adnan Menderes Airport

The closest airport to Izmir city is Adnan Menderes Airport. Flights to this airport run regularly from Istanbul, and major European cities such as Cologne, Berlin, London and Paris.

To get into the centre of Izmir town one can use either the havaş bus shuttle or the train. The havaş bus leaves regularly from the airport's domestic terminal and takes just under an hour to reach the city. The train departs from the international terminal and arrives at the main train station in the north of the city.

Taxis are also available outside the airport. Travel by taxi cna be quite expensive, and it is best to agree on a price before departing on your journey.

Arriving in Izmir by Rail

It is fairly easy to travel by train between Izmir and the surrounding towns such as Aydin and Selçuk (for Ephesus). Trains to Istanbul usually involve a land journey to Bandırma, after which the rest of the journey is made by ferry. Trains leave from the two main stations, Basmane and Alsancak stations, and although they are reported to sometimes be less efficient than bus travel, they do offer comforts such as sleeper cabins and aircon which are welcome when travelling in hot weather or overnight.

Arriving in Izmir by Ferry and Boat

Ferry services to Izmir stop at the nearby port of Çesme. Routes run from Chios (in Greece), Venice and Ancona in Italy, however the timetable can be quite eratic (especially out of summer season) so always finalise your ferry times and tickets well before you intend to travel.
