Cuba, the largest Caribbean island, is a sunny, fertile, Spanish-speaking place. Rum and cigars are its best known products; its musicians and music are world-famous. Following the Cuban Revolution of 1959 there has been a political dispute between the state of Cuba and its largest neighbour, the USA.
Havana, the country's capital and largest city, is on the northwestern coast. Its elegant old centre, La Habana Vieja, is now a major draw for tourists. Stretching outwards from the centre the modern city has many attractive parts. There, distinctive 1950s cars cruise around streets that are full of life. Vacationers may easily combine a short stay in the capital with some days at one of Cuba's excellent beaches.
