Havana Transportation
Some areas (e.g. La Habana Vieja) are easy to get around by foot. Away from these, those travelling on all-in tours should find that their hosting company has arranged a transport service. Since independent travel is not always easy it is often best to take advantage of these trips.
Arriving by Air
International flights operate through several airports, the busiest of which is Havana's Jose Marti International Airport. Domestic services operate between Havana and various other airports.
Arriving by Car
Rental cars are available in Cuba, but most guides recommend hiring a taxi. Roads are old and not perfect, but due to a petrol shortage on the island they are almost always congestion free.
Arriving by Train
A train service runs between the capital Havana and the city of Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city.
Getting Around Havana
La Habana Vieja is small enough to make walking around it a pleasant experience. Travel outside this area is usually most convenient by taxi.
Official taxis are available and are recommended. Some are painted white and known as "Turistaxis". Panataxi also operate offical cabs and may be contacted by telephone. Vehicles are usually modern and well looked after. Payments are made in US dollars.
