Ile Maurice - Transport

Getting Around Mauritius By Air

Air Mauritius Helicopter Services operate from several beach hotels, offering 1-hour and half-hour trips of the island, and flights between hotels.

Getting Around Mauritius By Car

Major car rental companies have desks at the larger hotels. A valid driver’s licence is normally required.

Good tar roads cover 1,800km of the island. The M2 runs from Plaisance over the plateau to Port Louis and on to Grand Baie while A and B roads criss-cross the island.

Mauritians drive on the left. Seat belts are compulsory as are helmets for motorcycle riders and their passengers. Speed limits are 90kph on the M2, 80kph on A roads, 60kph on B roads and 40kph in built-up areas. Locals drive with their hands on the hooter, making for a noisy experience.

Driving is dangerous, as roads are narrow, speeding is rife and rules of the road ignored. Accidents are common. If involved in an accident you are required in principle to remain at the scene, but in dangerous circumstances, it is best to drive straight to a police station.

Getting Around Mauritius By Taxi

Taxis have a yellow roof sign and black-lettered number plates. Meters are not generally used although there is an official tariff that should be negotiated before boarding the taxi. Arrangements can be made with taxi drivers for hire on a daily or longer basis, with many acting as guides.

Getting Around Mauritius By Public Bus

Public buses service the whole island, running from 0530-2000 in the towns, 0630-1830 between villages. A night service operates from Port Louis to Curepipe, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas. Timetables can be obtained from the National Transport Authority in Victoria Square and the MTPA in Port Louis or at the airport. It’s best not to travel during rush hours from 0730-0930 and 1600-1730.

Buses are a cheap but usually slow way of getting around.
