Askari Monument
Samora Machel Avenue
This dramatic bronze sculpture in the centre of the town was erected in remembrance of the African troops who died during World War 1.
The National Museum

The shady trees planted during the colonial era make this an attractive part of town. The National Museum building houses cultural, ecological, historical exhibits as well as sculptures, beautiful tiles and decorative carvings.
Nyerere Cultural Centre

This centre consists of artists’ studios, a travel agency, gifts, a café and and hosts musical concerts and traditional dance shows.
Kariakoo
The largest covered market on the continent is vibrant with colour, noise, hustle and bustle, but beware of pickpockets as this area is not safe for tourists.
The Village Museum
New Bagamoyo Road
The museum consists of 18 huts furnished in the styles of different ethnic groups. Traditional dances are performed and agricultural workers get on with their farming.
Mwenge Crafts Market

Haggle to your heart’s delight in this market where the Makonde tribe’s wooden carvings are a speciality.
Kivukoni Front
Watch the ships and dhows sailing through the narrow harbour entrance. Take a ferry to Kigamboni which resembles a tropical island across the harbour mouth. South Beach is a popular resort.
St Joseph’s Cathedral
Sokoine Drive
Overlooking the harbour, the elegant Gothic-spired Roman Catholic cathedral built by German missionaries at the turn of the 20th century, boasts beautiful stained glass windows behind the altar transmitting a translucent glow in the afternoon sunshine.
White Fathers’ Mission House
Close to the cathedral and dating from the 1860s, this is one of the oldest buildings in Dar es Salaam which became the order’s East African headquarters in 1922. It is thought to have been the harem of Sultan Majid of Zanzibar.
