Tanzania Climate

There are no distinct seasons in equatorial Africa. Tanzania’s climate varies from tropical along the coast and from temperate to alpine in the highlands, with two distinct rainy seasons dictated by the Indian Ocean trade winds.

Dar es Salaam and the coastal areas endure a hot, humid climate with an average daytime temperature of 30ºC. Temperatures range from the mid-twenties to low thirties from December to March and drop slightly between June and October.

The northeast trades from the Arabian Gulf blow intermittently from December to early March bringing with them hot ‘short rains’, the mavuli, characterised by light showers in the morning and late afternoon.

The southwest monsoons blow from mid-March to the end of May, bringing the ‘long rains’ the masika, characterised by heavy showers in the morning clearing throughout the day until starting again at night.

The southeast trades swirl in from the southern oceans from the end of May to the end of September, resulting in less humid weather along the coast and cooler, pleasant weather inland signalling the dry season. In the north of the country one can usually expect dry weather from June to October as well as from January to mid-March.
