Almost all travellers are required to obtain a travel visa prior to departure. This should be applied for via the Chinese Embassy in your home country, or the country in which you are currently travelling.
Passports should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of application. Visas are granted as single, double or multiple entry. Multiple entry visas can be granted for a six month or years validity. It is recommended that you apply one month before your intended date of entry into China.
There are a few visa exceptions, however most involve very specific criteria which would not apply should you intend to do a fair bit of travel around China, or wish to stay for longer than two weeks. Some of the visa exceptions include the following scenarios:
1. Those travelling on the following passports who are in transit through China via Shanghai for less than 48 hours do not require a visa: Republic of Korea, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Schengen states -- Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy.
2. Those travelling on the following passports who are in a group tour (more than five people) of the Hainan Province for a total stay of less than 15 days: Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, the UK, France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Ukraine and Kazakstan.
3. Russian, Republic of Korea and German passport holders who intend to travel in a group tour (more than two people) in the Hainan province for a total stay of less than 21 days.
4. Travellers who hold the following passports are permitted to travel through China for tourism, family or minor business visits for up to 15 days without a visa: Singapore, Brunei and Japan
