Cochin Attractions

Cochin boasts a wealth of historic landmarks as well as a host of interesting attractions which have contributed to the city’s magnificent allure. Visitors are always enchanted by the city’s friendly locals, beautiful beaches and the wonderful Cochin attractions.

Bolghatty Palace
A historic Dutch palace located on the Bolghatty Island. Today, the palace has been converted into a hotel - with a golf course and panoramic views.

Chinese Fishing Nets
Believed to be the fishing nets introduced by traders from Kubai Khan’s court, the Chinese Fishing Nets are the only one of its kind to be found in India.

The Dutch Palace
Originally built by the Portuguese, this historic landmark houses a wealth of Hindu paintings depicting scenes from the Mahabharath and Ramayana.

The Jewish Synagogue
A beautiful 16th century structure decorated with Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers, the Synagogue is a truly remarkable Cochin landmark.

St Francis Church
The oldest church built by Europeans in India, the St Francis Church was once the resting place of the remains of the famous trader and explorer, Vasco da Gama - until his remains were later transported to Portugal.

Mattancherry Palace
Originally built by the Portuguese and then presented to the King of Cochin, Veera Kerala Varma, in the 16th century. The palace is home to a large collection of works of art, including a portrait gallery of kings and murals depicting scenes from the Ramayana. The clothes, weapons, turbans etc. of bygone eras are also displayed at the Palace. The palace also features a Hindu temple in the courtyard surrounding it and two more temples on either side of the palace, dedicated to the Hindu gods Krishna and Shiva.

Hill Palace Museum, Thripunithra
Located a few minutes outside the city, the Hill Palace is the official residence of the royal family of Cochin. Built in the latter half of the 19th century, this historic monument houses a fabulous collection of 19th century oil paintings, sculptures, murals, manuscripts and coins.

Willingdon Island
The island is named after Lord Willingdon, the British viceroy to India. A man-made island, it remarkably is the site for the top Cochin hotels, customs and trading centres.
