Cochin Travel Tips
Travellers to India will find the city of Cochin a very interesting place to visit. Home to a wealth of historic attractions and two fabulous museums, Cochin offers art lovers a great holiday destination. Cochin’s multicultural society makes it a friendly place to be in while experiencing the best that this remarkable city has to offer.
Arts and Events
Cochin is a city that offers much for the art lover on holiday. The Hill Palace Museum is the official residence of the royal family - and houses a large collection of paintings, sculptures and old coins. The Pareekshith Thampuran Museum, a traditional Kerala-style building is also home to a large collection of sculptures, paintings and coins belonging to ancient times.
Cochin Tipping Advice
Tipping is quite common in Cochin, although it isn’t a must. Waiters at restaurants and porters at bus and railway stations usually expect a tip, around 10% to 15% of the bill or a fixed amount per heavy piece of luggage is the standard amount expected, although this depends entirely on the standard of service and personal choice.
Information for Visitors
Women Travellers
Women travellers are expected to be modestly dressed - short dresses or skirts and tight fitting or revealing clothes are best avoided - especially when travelling alone.
Footwear
Visitors to places of worship must remove their footwear, as a sign of respect, before stepping inside. A majority of Indians also remove their footwear when entering their own homes - therefore it is polite to do the same when visiting someone’s home.
Health Risks
Drinking bottled water is the best practice - especially during the monsoonal rains, when water contamination is at its worst. Boiled, cooked or fried food is much safer than cold and raw food.
