Verona's Main Attractions: Sights and Landmarks

Casa di Giuletta

An homage to the fictional characters of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Casa di Giuletta attracts thousands of tourists each year, each eager to live out the much-loved story. The house itself once belonged to the dell Capello family, and the similarity between this surname and Juliet's own (Capulet) is most likely what began rumours of the house once belonging to Juliet. Whether or not Juliet Capulet was ever a real women on whom Shakespeare based his character is debatable, however hopeless romantics cannot help but get caught up in the atmosphere which pervades this building.

Entry to the courtyard is free, however an entry fee is charged to enter the house. Inside the house there is a small museum of artefacts.

Anfiteatro Arena

Similar in construction to the famous arean in Rome, Verona's Arena di Verona was one used to host gladiator fights, markets, tournaments and jousts. Although it is over 2000 years old however it is still used for performances, from opera and music to theatre. One is able to visit the arena for an entrance fee - be sure to climb to the top of the steps for a remarkable view.

Italy is a country where each city contains at least one sprawling town squares, and the Piazza delle Erbe certainly lives up to this expectation. The square was the original site of the Roman forum when the Romans occupied Verona hundreds of years ago, and is today still used as a meeting place and market area.

Ponte Scaligero and Castelvecchio

The Castelvecchio, which translates as 'old castle', is a 13th century castle built for the ruling . This ponte scaligero is a bridge which is part of the Castelvecchio, and connects the centuries-old castle with the opposite side of the Adige River. It continues running directly through the castle, dividing it into two halves.

Santa Maria Matricolare

The Santa Maria Matricolare is a magnificent cathederal or duomo, which dates back to the 12th century. It was built in a Romanesque style but includes elements of Gothic and Renaissance architecture due to later additions and improvements. It is one Verona's most reknown churches.

Museo di Castelvecchio

A 13th century castle, the Castelvecchio is now a museum housing various works including weapons, sculptures, jewellery and frescoes from the Medieval and Roman periods.

Palazzo Forti Galleria d’Arte Moderna

The Palazzo Forti is a modern art gallery containing contemporary works dating from 1997. It also hosts temporary exhibitions from time to time. Part of the building dates from the 13th century.

Museo di Storia Naturale (Natural History Museum)

The museum is housed in the Palazzo Pompeii, an iconic building designed by architect Sanmicheli and built circa 1550. The museum contains collections of zoological, geologic, palaeonthologic and pre-historic interest.
