Bali's golden beaches, picturesque rice terraces, active volcanoes, sacred caves and lush tropical forests are just a few of the attractions this island paradise has to offer. Rich in cultural heritage, temples and palaces abound, and festivals and traditional ceremonies, involving drama, music and dancing, are part of the Balinese way of life and are held regularly. Artisan villages, selling gold and silver jewellery, stone carvings, handicrafts and textiles, are numerous and shops are plentiful. Scuba-diving is a very popular pastime as is white-water rafting, horse riding and island cruising. For legendary surfing, head south to the beaches of Medewi, Kuta and Uluwatu.
Tanah Lot
Tabanan, 20 km from Denpasar
Tanah Lot is a rock formation situated just off-shore in the south of Bali. It has become a photographic icon of the island, and of exotic travel as a whole, and is one of the most popular tourist venues for overseas visitors and local tourists alike. You will need a ticket to cross over to the temple area, which you can buy on-site, and may not be allowed into the temple itself as it is still used for prayer. Although the area has become quite commercialised, a sunset photograph of the temple is still a perfect tribute to your stay in Bali.
Pura Agung Jagatnatha
Jalan Letkal, Denpasar, Bali
A temple dedicated to the supreme god, Sanghyang Widi Wasa, the supreme of divine gatherings. Note: Respectful dress is required in all Balinese temples so ensure your knees are covered and that you carry a light shawl to cover your shoulders. Alternatively most temples have cover-ups available, sometimes for a small donation.
Bali Museum
Jalan Letkol Wisnu, Denpasar, Bali
The Bali Museum houses a collection of art and artefacts dating from prehistoric through to contemporary times. Althought he building was built in 1931, it was designed according to the style of a Denpasar royal palace and as such is a beautiful building in itself.
Waterbom Park
Jalan Kartika Plaza, Tuban, Kuta, Bali
Tel: +62 361 75 5676
Waterbom Park is a western-style water park with a Balinese influence in the surround decor. It has the usual kids pool, super slides, and lazy tubing river, and is a great way to spend the day if you have grown tired of the beach.
Museum Le Mayeur
Jalan Hang Tuah, Sanur, Bali
Sunday – Thursday 7:30 am -3:30 pm
Friday 7:30am – 1pm
Tel: (0361) 286-201
Located moments away from Sanur Beach, the Museum Le Mayeur houses a selection of artworks by Belgian artist Andrien Jean Le Mayeur. The building itself is the artists former home, and its beachfront location must have played a major influence on his painting style, which seems to encapsulates the beauty and harmony of Bali with each brushstroke.
Ayung River Walk
Ayung River, Sanur, South Bali
The Ayung River is the longest river in Bali and the site of many adrenaline activities including white water raftin, elephant and horse rides and and river kayaking. A walk along the river from Kedewatan Village (on the outskirts of Ubud) will reveal stunning views of the river valley and rice paddies, as well as a traditional temple. There are more formal paths along the river near Sayan, although these can sometimes be quite steep so take great care in wet weather.
