The Local Economy in Bali

While Bali may be synonymous with idyllic holidays and world-class hotels, the local economy has many other offerings apart from its beaches and cultural tourism. Clothing and textiles, and handicrafts such as wood-carved produucts are now a major contributor to the economy and provide millions of US dollars worth of export income. In the agricultural sector, rice, tea and coffee are staple exports as well as vanilla, soy beans, chilies and cacao.

One significant impact which tourism has had on most of these economic sectors though is on the job concentration, as currently the majority of jobs are located in the southern parts of the island where the main resorts are, ranging from tourism-related jobs to trade and farming.

Business Etiquette and Customs

Bali Dress Code
Business dress consists of suits for both men and women. Out of business, clothing should comprise lightweight, casual items. Warmer clothes are needed for cool evenings and the upland areas. In temples and government buildings, smarter clothing is essential.

Greeting Someone in Bali
Business people should be addressed by their title along with a right-handed handshake for both men and women. Business cards are also considered important and should be exchanged during introductions.

Bali Business Hours and Banking
Hours of business in Bali are Monday to Friday from 09:00 till 13:00 and 14:00 till 17:00. Most places of business will also trade on Saturday mornings from 09:00 to 13:00. Banks will not be open on Saturday mornings but will be open during the week from 09:30 to 15:00.

Bali Smoking
There is a ban on smoking on public transport in Bali and the visitor should observe this even if the locals often do not. In business, it is advisable to refrain and take cues from the host.
