Bali is quite easy to explore either with your own transport, or by public transport. If you are staying in one of the more developed resort areas in the south, it will probably be easier to walk however if you wish to travel further afield without using your legs there are a few options.
Public Transport
The public buses and bemos (a smaller version of a bus) are exceptionally cheap although they can be quite crowded and hot. They are a good way to meet locals and explore the villages though, if you don't mind sharing your seat or enduring an indeterminate number of stops.
Car and Motorbike Rental
Hiring your own car or motorbike is only necessary if you are intent on exploring a large area of the island and want to create your own itinerary as you go. The independance of not having a driver waiting would need to outweigh the potential safety hazard of driving in the unfamiliar Balinese traffic, as there are many unwritten road rules one would need to become accustomed to. Still, if you have an adventurous spirit, motobike hire should cost between Rp. 35,000 to Rp. 50,000 per day. You will need to have an international drivers license for car or motorbike hire.
Taxi Boats
Small boats go to a number of islands offshore, notably those in the Nusa Penida group. Boarding is via a short wade through the water, so be careful with valuables. It is wise to wrap items like cameras in waterproof bags as they could get soaked by spray.
Private Drivers and Taxis
As with most Asian tourist destinations, you will have no shortage of drivers eager to ferry you around for a fee on any manner of vehicle, ranging from a motorbike to a luxury SUV. Be sure to shop around as prices can vary drastically - if in doubt, ask your hotel what the going rate should be for a day or half-days driver. Also, ensure you agree on your price with your driver before you set out.
Taxis are plentiful in Bali although whether yours comes with aircon is usually hit and miss. They can be metered or set price, so be sure to ascertain the fare type before commencing the journey.
