Dubrovnik's Local Cuisine & Customs

Understandably, local cuisine is seafood. Enjoying a busy tourist trade, Mediterranean cuisine is the order of the day with Italian dishes served in most restaurants. There are also Greek and North African restaurants. Blitva, boiled Swiss chard and potato drenched in olive oil, is served as a side dish with most fish and seafood dishes.

Calamari with blitva, cod, pork and beef dishes in the form of casseroles, risottos, and barbecued fillets are staples and will feature on most menus. Vegetarians are catered for with local seasonal vegetable dishes. Black cherry and chocolate cake, a rich seven-layered wafer and chocolate torte, cheese cake, Povitica, a sweet breadroll filled with moist walnuts, are just some mouth-watering desserts. Local wines are a good accompaniment to a Dalmatian meal.

Dubrovnik's Restaurants

There are many restaurants along the Placa, in the atmospheric Prijeko Street running parallel on the northern side of the Placa, up the steep narrow alleys which abound, and throughout Old Town. As the climate favours it, many restaurants are alfresco so you can people-watch while you eat.

Outside the walls, Lapad is a popular dining area with many restaurants and bars.
