Shopping in the Seychelles Islands: Markets and Bazaars

Visit the colourful and vibrant Victoria Market for local produce and handcrafted souvenirs such as woven mats, hats and baskets made from palm leaves.

The haunting soul music of the African slaves, moutya, is captured on CDs by several musicians and can be bought in Victoria.

Cultural Bazars (markets) at various venues on Mahé showcase the island way of life through markets and music, which enable tourists to participate in the Kreol culture. Fruit and vegetables, arts and crafts, culinary delights are on sale.


Local Products and Gift Ideas

Good buys are fabulous black pearl and gold jewellery fashioned on Mahé and Praslin and South African diamonds and gemstones sold at Kenwyn House in Victoria. Spirit Artisanal makes its own liqueurs including Coco d’Amour. Antigone Trading sells books on Seychelles.

Local spices, cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, lemon grass teas and perfumes made from patchouli make popular gifts.

There are numerous art galleries dotted around Mahé selling paintings, pottery and sculptures. Le Village Artisanal at Anse Aux Pins is a working artists craft village where fine paintings can be purchased.


Shop Opening Hours

Shops are closed on Saturday afternoon and Sundays, but some rural markets will remain open.


What Not to Buy

Shells and corals which are often taken live from the sea. Turtle and tortoiseshell goods should not be bought as they are protected by CITES. You will require government certification to buy coco de mer products.
