Liverpool - Getting There

Arriving in Liverpool by Air

Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport is located only seven miles from the city and is easy to reach either by bus or taxi.

The train station closest to the airport, Liverpool South Parkway station, is two miles from the airport and so it is necessary to catch the connecting public bus (bus line 501) to the airport. From the city centre, a taxi would cost about £15 for the journey. There are also several public buses which run from the city centre to the airport, including lines 80A, 86A and 500.

Arriving in Liverpool by Rail

Train is one of the most affordable and comfortable way to reach Liverpool from other locations within the UK. The main train station is Liverpool Lime Street station, and it has several national railway operators which run services from this station.

Journeys to London and the south of England are operated by Virgin Rail and London Midland, including high-speed services direct to London. Travel to Scotland can be made by Virgin Rail or First TransPennine Express however a change at Manchester may be required.

Arriving in Liverpool by Road - Bus or Coach

National Express is one of the largest coach travel operators in the UK, and has bus services to Liverpool from almost all over the UK. Bus or coach travel is often much cheaper than the train, but can be quite time consuming. For example, a journey from London to Liverpool can takes about six hours compared to the train which would take only two hours.

Arriving in Liverpool by Road - Driving

Liverpool is easily accessible by several major motorways. The M58 links Liverpool with the northbound M6 for Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle. The M62 heads eastwards from Liverpool, passing through Manchester and Leesds.

Travelling from London and other cities in the South of England, one would use the M6 through Birmingham until it meets the M1. The M1 continues south, arriving in London through the northern suburbs.

Arriving in Liverpool by Ferry

Liverpool can be reached by ferry from Dublin and Belfast or the Isle of Man. All three journey’s operate quite regularly and can be booked online. The Liverpool to Belfast journey is the longest and takes about eight hours, however you can choose between a day or night crossing.

You can also reach Liverpool by ferry from… Manchester! A shipping canal route was built over 100 years ago between Manchester and Liverpool. Today it is also used a a route for tourist ferry journeys between the two cities and, although it takes just over six hours each way, it is a great way to enjoy to countryside, history and architecture of North West England.
